Clematis ‘Solidarność’ is a compact, deciduous climber renowned for its rich, velvety red flowers. Bred by Polish breeder Szczepan Marczyński and introduced to Australia by Alameda Homestead Nursery in 2025, this variety was named in honour of the Polish Solidarity movement.
The plant produces large, single blooms measuring approximately 12–18 cm in diameter, featuring deep burgundy petals with a velvety texture. As the flowers age, they fade gracefully to a lighter red, adding depth to the display. The stamens consist of creamy white filaments topped with dark red anthers, creating a striking contrast.
‘Solidarność’ blooms profusely from October to March, with the first flush appearing on old wood and subsequent blooms on new growth. Its compact growth habit, reaching heights of 1.5 to 1.7 meters, makes it ideal for small gardens, containers, or training over trellises and fences.
This clematis thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained, fertile soils. It belongs to pruning group 2 and requires light pruning after the first flowering to encourage new blooms. Its resilience and long flowering period make ‘Solidarność’ a valuable addition to any garden.
