Clematis ‘Shirotaka’ is a compact, deciduous climber developed by renowned Japanese breeder Hiroshi Hayakawa and introduced to Australia by Alameda Homestead Nursery in 2024. It showcases elegant creamy white flowers, approximately 12–15 cm in diameter, each adorned with a subtle pale green central bar. Blooming from early spring through to autumn, ‘Shirotaka’ adds a graceful presence to gardens over an extended season.

Growing to a manageable height of 1.5 to 2 meters, this variety is ideal for smaller spaces, containers, or training over trellises and arches. It belongs to pruning group 2 and requires light pruning after the first flush of blooms to encourage further flowering. Plant in well-drained soil with consistent moisture for optimal growth, ensuring the roots are kept cool and shaded while the foliage enjoys full sun to partial shade.

The name ‘Shirotaka’ derives from Japanese, where ‘Shiro’ means white, ‘ta’ means many, and ‘ka’ means flower. This name aptly reflects the plant’s profusion of white blooms.
